What Really Happened

I would like all of Ralfi's fans to know the truth, exactly what happened to him. In the early 70's, Ralfi met a businessman who wanted to get into the music industry. He contracted with Ralfi and started promoting him. Things went well for a while, but business started to taper off, so the promoter decided Ralfi should go on tour in Colombia to make money.

Ralfi flew to Colombia and was there for almost two weeks. He wrote a letter to our mom, saying that things weren't going according to plan. No one had contacted him for gigs or interviews. On his own, he arranged interviews at various radio stations there. Finally, he was contacted by the promoter's agents. They came to Ralfi's hotel and picked him up to go perform. Instead, they took him to a beach, killed him and left his body there. It was a setup.

Our family was devastated. Adding insult to injury, my sister, Isabel, read in the newspaper in New York that Ralfi Pagan died in Colombia because of drugs. That got me really pissed off. My brother, Ralfi, did not smoke pot. He didn't drink beer, he didn't drink liquor. He was just high off his music. Occasionally, on special occasions, birthdays, holidays, he might have a little glass of champagne, but that's it.

I just want everyone to know the way my brother passed away. It's very sad that a good man, with a love of music, leaves this beautiful world, and a lot of people think he passed away because of drugs. That couldn't be further from the truth. So for those who believe that, I hope this clears it up for you. I want all of Ralfi's wonderful fans to know the truth. I have it all documented, all the paperwork, what really happened to him....where, when and why, and it was all about money.

Some day, these people will get theirs, through a higher power. Thank you, all you wonderful fans. God bless. Qué Dios les bendiga!

  1. I really love your brothers music. His smooth, lovely voice...such a tragedy. How about making a Myspace dedicated to him with his biography, special pics, music and footage along with this important info? That would be wonderful, coming from the people who loved and knew him best.

  3. Hello,

I grew up in Brooklyn listening to Ralfi's music. I still do. I took his music with me on my tour of duty in the US Marines. I did not know of his death, very sorry to hear this.

The way I found out, is that I use to hang out with his half brother named Red (Pagan) I met your father, which at that time was with Red's mother in brookyn lady of irish desent (many Irish Puerto Ricans) . It has been a long time so I do not remember all the names. I have lost contact with Red we were very good friends. I been doing searches for Ralfi and came across this page. I did meet Ralfi a number of times when Red and I would go to the clubs. The first time was at the St George Hotel in Brooklyn.

I hope to one day find my good friend Red Pagan. May Ralfi rest in peace and will always be remembered and his music will always be played and listened to in my home and around the world. If anyone knows of the where abouts of Red Pagan, Please have his call me. Phil Rivera 772-646-1049 in Florida. Thanks to all.

  7. Hi Angel. Thanks for posting this. There were so many stories I heard about my favorite Sweet Latin Soul Artist Ralfi Pagan. Many said "It was a car accident in Los Angeles, others in the music industry claims it was suicide over a woman, others said it was over a bad drug deal. I got so sick of it that I stop listening to people. I still play his music on Hard Salsa Radio and on 91.9 FM in NYC. We will also continue to play his music. By the way, I need to update our memorial page for Ralfi I created in 2005 at http://www.hardsalsa.com/ralfipagan.html

I need his place of birth, date of birth and the date of his deceased if you can provide that. If you have photos of you and him and family members, baby pictures shoot it over to us and I post it on Hardsalsa.com You can contact me via the website. May Ralfi Pagan's music is always remembered for generations to generations. RIP Ralfi Pagan. Now we know the truth. He can now rest in peace. By the way Angel, very nice photo of Ralfi.

  14. He was a class act, a master in his field. We all celebrate his life, and his legacy. I will always hold him in the highest regard as an artist and a human being. His connecting with all the people he did, will remember his impact forever. God Bless you all his family, and the world, for experiencing such raw talent, not many carried that caliber of musical genius. Respectfully Jesse Perez AKA DJMUSICOLOGIST Los Angeles Califonia.

  23. In the last year I have come to know your genius of a brother's music. Here in the UK he is not as well known but I have a vague memory of Don't Stop Now and of course Make It With You. I feel humbled and honoured to have these sides to listen to. He has become a firm favourite of mine. Can you tell me if there is any live or video footage of him? I understand he was on Soul Train.

  24. I am crazy late. I never knew what happened to him. My Mama had the 45 of Stray Woman and she used to play it a lot when I was little. I always remembered that song. I didn't know too much about Ralfi Pagan personally, but I remember Stray Woman vividly. It's a shame of what happened to him, but even years later, his music still lives on.

  37. I'm from the Bronx, grew up listening to Ralfi and later when I moved to the West Coast I saw him perform in Montebello and other clubs. Made me proud being a Bronx/Puerto Rican roots. Those involved in his atrocious murder deprived us from enjoying many more years of his great talent. I will always cherish the memories. Gone but NEVER forgotten!!

  40. I have been a fan of Ralphi's music for a number of years. I am in my mid 20s so I never got to listen to his records at the time but I think he had one of the most unique, heartfelt and passionate voices of all time. His love songs are some of the most powerful ever recorded. It saddens me deeply to read this piece you so honestly and humbly put across. My heart goes out to you and his family. What a tragedy, and so upsetting that it was never properly investigated. I know that black and hispanic artists were routinely exploited and undervalued in those days by the industry but this is a huge step beyond that and very difficult to learn. Estoy orando por ustedes.......
